Latest Handset News

Pictures and details about a set of two Android-based smartphones from the newly single Sony have emerged online this week.

The first handset goes by the codename Tapioca and is set to be a more affordable entry on the market. This should be obvious from the presence of a reported 800MHz single core processor and 3.2 inch touchscreen display.

The Tapioca will also have Android version 2.3 onboard and pack in 4GB of storage space, which is decent enough although it looks like users should not expect an update to Android 4.0 any time soon if these specifications prove to be accurate.

Sony may not end up launching the Tapioca in Europe as Pocket Droid is only reporting that it will hit the Asian market later in 2012, which might explain why the hardware is less competitive by Western standards.

The Sony Nypon is the second smartphone which has broken cover this week, albeit without quite the same degree of information when it comes to the components.

On the outside the Nypon bears a striking similarity to the recently announced Xperia S, which means it will come with a slimmed-down chassis and could well end up with a dual core processor working its magic under the bonnet, although nothing has been confirmed at this point.

Sony is thought to be preparing the final editions of these phones and many other models for a first showing at MWC 2012, with speculative release dates of April placed on the handsets at this time.

If you do pick up either of these Android handsets when they arrive later in the year then you could be able to access Microsoft`s Xbox Live service directly on your mobile.

This is according to reports that the software giant is working to port over a dedicated gaming app to both Android and even Apple`s iOS mobile operating system.

Windows Phone handsets like the Nokia Lumia 800 have Xbox Live deeply integrated into their smartphone experience, allowing them to earn Gamer Score for playing games, see when their friends are online and even control their Xbox 360 console using an on-phone application.

There is already an Xbox Live app for Android, but this is a limited, scaled down version of what Windows Phone users can anticipate. Now Microsoft is apparently going to make efforts to bring the full experience to rival platforms.

Microsoft said in a statement that it appreciated not all Xbox 360 owners and Live customers would want to buy a Windows Phone handset and as such it was looking to accommodate the large numbers of people with Android and iOS smartphones.

Although this might be seen as something of a sideways step given that it might remove some of the exclusivity that Windows Phone models currently have over other platforms, it would definitely be beneficial in the long run as Microsoft would generate more revenue from digital downloads. There is no word as to whether BlackBerry Bold contracts of the future will be getting Xbox Live support, but if RIM`s next-gen handsets take off then this might well occur.

Latest Mobile News and Reviews

Many mobile users are dazzled by the technological prowess of expensive handsets like the iPhone 4S and HTC Sensation XL, but you do not need to fork out large amounts of money to get a comprehensive smartphone experience thanks to the growing number of adept, budget-conscious handsets which are available.

The Orange San Francisco 2 has been released in recent weeks and it sets out to continue the good work started by its predecessor, combining affordability and high end functionality in one neat, sleek package.

At the centre of the San Francisco 2`s updates is its snazzy new design, which is reminiscent of a number of more expensive models thanks to its slim chassis and tapering rear. There is still plenty of plastic used throughout, but it never feels like it is cheap or tacky, so you will not be ashamed to pull this out of your pocket at a bar.

The 3.5 inch touchscreen display found here is almost exactly the same as that of the first San Francisco, using capacitive technology to deliver a tactile, swift and responsive user experience. The high resolution of 480×800 is another boon that is brought over from the previous iteration, so compared to most budget-centric smartphones things will look crisp and colourful, which is very useful when watching videos or browsing the internet.

Hidden in the bowels of the San Francisco 2 is an 800MHz processor, faster than the 600MHz CPU used in the original. You also get 512MB of storage space which can be expanded via microSD memory card. In all the phone will not feel quite in the same league as the most expensive models when it comes to the smoothness of its multitasking or menu transitions, but for this money you should be quite impressed.

The full Android 2.3 experience is available to owners of the Orange San Francisco 2. While it is not likely to get Android 4.0 due to its limited hardware, there is more than enough oomph about Google`s last major mobile operating system to keep the phone in contention. The hundreds of thousands of applications available on the Android Market are reason enough to make it a worthy investment.

A smartphone is only as good as its connectivity options and the San Francisco 2 has all you could expect. Wi-Fi, 3G and GPS are ready to be used for browsing and location-based services, while Bluetooth is also on hand if you want to connect your peripherals or share media with other nearby users.

A camera upgrade gives the San Francisco 2 five megapixels to play with, as well as a flash to help capture better shots during darker periods of the day. With a secondary camera slapped discretely onto the front of the phone you can chat via video with friends and family.

The Orange San Francisco 2 is one of many affordable Android mobile phones that are vying for your attention at the moment and in some ways it is the best of the bunch.

iPhone 4 Review

Review of iPhone 4

When Apple`s iPhone 4 launched in mid-2010 many mobile enthusiasts believed that they had got the new handset sussed. Leaks and misplaced prototypes meant that its details were largely known, but few were prepared for the popularity and the technical problems which defined the early days after its release.

It has had some time to mature, so is the iPhone 4 worth buying?

The hardware of the iPhone 4 is still one of its assets and perhaps something that consumers overlook as they indulge in its software delights. With tough glass on the front and rear combined with a metallic ring encircling its outer edge and acting as an antenna, this is one handsome handset. Things are equally impressive on the inside, where an A4 processor and 512 MB of RAM are available to make it slicker and more powerful than any of its predecessors. You can pick between a 16GB or 32GB version, depending on your budget and how much storage space you require.

The iPhone 4 is the first in the range to actually feature a class-leading camera. Gone is the 3.2 megapixel snapper of the 3GS in favour of a five megapixel powerhouse with an LED flash to make sure it can be used in any condition. As well as having solid still capture capabilities the iPhone 4 can record high definition video in 720p. You can then edit this on the phone and share it with your friends with ease.

On the front of the iPhone 4 is a second digital camera and although this does not pack the same punch as that on the rear it is designed for use with the new FaceTime services. FaceTime is a video calling app which lets you chat with other iPhone 4 and iPod Touch users over a Wi-Fi connection as if you were face to face in the same room. Including this allows the iPhone 4 to catch up and overtake its rivals since it is more convenient and simple to use than previous video calling capabilities on mobile phones.

The world of the iPhone 4 is viewed via its 3.5 inch Retina Display. While the dimensions match that of its predecessors, the Retina Display has a much higher pixel density and a class-leading resolution of 960×640. This technical mumbo-jumbo basically identifies that the iPhone 4`s display is sharper and easier to use than any other on the market. Reading text, watching videos or viewing photos is all a joy and the internet is available in finer detail than ever before. Apps are also cleaner when viewed on the iPhone 4`s display.

The iPhone 4 runs Apple`s latest version of the iOS platform and it is backwards compatible with the hundreds of thousands of apps which can be downloaded free or for a small fee. Multitasking has been added to the third party apps with this updated operating system, making it easy to dive in and out of i Phone apps without losing your place. In short the iPhone 4 is not only the best mobile Apple has ever made but arguably the best in the world today.

Mobile Phone Recycling

Recycle Mobile Phones – Help Environment & Get Paid!

Mobile phone recycling is increasingly an important environmental issue; in spite of this, however, most people have never recycled an old mobile phone once it has reached the end of its shelf life.

Electronic waste is, however, a growing environmental problem; it is the fastest-growing kind of waste found in landfills.

To cite just a single example, in 2005 alone discarded consumer electronics, a large proportion of which are mobile phones, made up somewhere between 1.9 and 2.2 million tonnes of waste. Of this, between 80 and 90 per cent ends up in a landfill; only a tiny proportion of electronic waste ever finds its way to being recycled.

There is also the serious concern that poisonous substances used in consumer electronics, when not safely dealt with, could leech into water systems via landfills, ultimately poisoning water supplies. In light of this, the EU, as well as certain US states, have passed laws regulating the disposal of electronic waste; this, however, may not be enough to curb the problem.

In light of this, it is essential that people become aware of the environmental problem that simply discarding their old mobile phones could cause, and become aware of the alternative: mobile phone recycling for cash!

What Others Have to Say:

E-waste, discarded electronics, from computers to cell phones to TVs, are now the fastest-growing waste stream in the U.S. It is also big business: Hundreds of companies buy and sell the discarded components and materials, generating a $6 billion market in the U.S. But e-waste, which contains such toxics as lead and… moreE-waste, discarded electronics, from computers to cell phones to TVs, are now the fastest-growing waste stream in the U.S. It is also big business: Hundreds of companies buy and sell the discarded components and materials, generating a $6 billion market in the U.S….read more

Samsung S5230 Tocco Lite: In a Nutshell – would probably be described something like "Stylish, budget handset,” it offers everything you would expect from a device of this category, at a very reasonable cost. Fabulous fun user interface with easy access to Facebook and YouTube, but lacks of 3G. Available in black or pink.

Sony Ericsson W995: In a Nutshell – it’s the latest phone from Sony to carry the famous Walkman name. Music-oriented and photography-centred, full set of connectivity options, GPS, Wi-Fi and the great user interface make a sweet enough package on their own. Main disadvantages: no lens protection, video recording limited to WQVGA, no DivX/XviD video support.

HTC Hero: In a Nutshell – the fact that HTC Hero’s use of the menu and search keys will bring up different options in different home screens, means that user can quickly feel at home even in new and alien applications. And while it might not be winning any style awards but at the same time it’s well laid out and fits comfortably in the hand. If you can stand the Hero’s sluggishness at times, it’s a fantastic smart phone packed with great features.

LG Cookie KP500: In a Nutshell – Although it misses out on 3G and a top class camera (which is a shame) but dispite that this phone has most features that most people will want: 3.2 megapixel camera, a media player, an FM radio, Bluetooth wireless connectivity and a memory card slot, LG KP500 has all the essentials. It does not have as many features as iPhone, but if you’re on a budget and you love the idea of having a touchscreen phone, the LG Cookie KP500 is definitely an option.

Nokia 97: In a Nutshell – some say the N97 is probably the most stunning and greatest mobile handset to date. Some are not too sure whether the N97 can be put anywhere near in same category as Apple iPhone killer, or even a BlackBerry Storm killer, or any other killer for that matter. However, while it is not as user friendly as the iPhone but N97 was built on a foundation of rock solid mobile principles, Nokia innovations, and tangible new technologies and has lots of power under the hood. Nokia have also stated that there will be some big updates coming to the N97 in the future which makes everyone even curious to see how much these add to the device.

BlackBerry Curve 8900: In a Nutshell – it’s neither too small nor too big, nor is it too heavy or too light, and it looks and feels like a quality product. Great for email, messaging and length of battery life, has a music player that handles various music formats (including MP3 and AAC), and a video player that handles certain DivX and Xvid files, but, disappointingly, there’s no 3G. On the subject of Google Maps, the 8900 comes with built-in GPS, but the lack of 3G prevents a smooth experience. While the phone might not be perfect, but it takes all those things that defined the BlackBerry Curve as a great business tool and gives it a consumer sheen.

iPhone 3GS: In a Nutshell – from the outside the 3GS is exactly the same as the 3G, slightly heavier and has glossy text on the back. But there’s a reason why Apple called this the iPhone 3GS: Speed is the central upgrade here, and probably is the single biggest reason you would want upgrade to a 3GS from a 3G. The video really shows how fast the iPhone 3GS is – Safari, email, camera are all loading noticeably faster. Hardware additions like better camera, compass and fingerprint-resistant screen are a nice touch.

                                                               TIPS & TRICKS

Magical Mobile : Did you know your phone could do this??

The mobile phone is hardly just a way for you to be in touch with those you love, anytime, anywhere. Your phone could actually get you out of a tight spot.

Here’s how:

1. If you’re in a place out of range of your mobile network, worry not! Dialling 112, the worldwide emergency number for mobiles, will get your phone connected to the nearest available network, and you will be able to make your call. Usefully enough, you can also call this number even if your keypad is locked. See if it works!

2. So you’ve been not careful enough to lock your car with the keys inside and you’re already running late for a meeting. Your laptop is inside your car. What do you do? Use your phone! Call someone at home (where, hopefully, you will have left your spare keys) from your mobile on their mobile and ask them to pick up the keys and hold them close to the phone. Hold your own phone about a foot from the door of the car, and ask them to press the unlock button.
Your car door will open! (of course, this only works if you have a remote key. Distance is no object)

 3.  Your phone battery is almost dead, and you need to make/take a call. If you own a Nokia mobile phone, you can breathe easy. Your phone comes with a backup or reserve battery. Press 3370#, and you’ll see your mobile restart and your battery will magically be 50% full.

Nokia 5530 XpressMusic Reviews

Nokia 5530 XpressMusic touch screen phone weighs a light 107 grams and measures just 104 mm (height) x 49 mm (width) x 13 mm (thickness). Large 2.9 inches screen makes navigating the interface super easy, and because of size of the screen there are of course no physical keys or keypad. The Nokia 5530 is available in a full range of colours, with most popular red and black, blue and white, pink and white, or yellow and white.

A specific focus of XpressMusic phone is of course the music features. With stereo surround speakers and just a few dedicated music buttons the sound quality you get is great. The music player is made easy to navigate, and changing tracks and volume is achieved through either using the touch screen or using them dedicated buttons. As an addition there is also a RDS FM Radio player.

Build in 3.2 mega pixel camera on the Nokia 5530 has auto focus and an Led Flash. Overall the camera will produce high quality pictures that are printable, and it’s massive internal memory of 70MB can be increased further to 16GB. The camera is very easy to use and the large screen makes picture viewing enjoyable.

All standard applications such as calculator, calendar and personal organiser are included, as well as some advanced ones, such as a document viewer (excel, pdf, powerpoint and word), and Nokia Maps. Internet connectivity is great with HSCSD, Edge, GPRS and WIFI. The lack of 3G is it’s main diadvantage, however it is possible to connect to third party devices with the help of Bluetooth.

To summarise:

Nokia 5530 XpressMusic with brilliantly developed music player and surround stereo speakers is a pretty damn good phone, very music orientated, as you could have guessed it by the name. However, the camera is also on a par with other similar phones on a market, and the internet connectivity is only let down by missing 3G.

What Do Customers Have To Say :

Alex Viljanen Says:
5530 is something that I have been waiting for a long time. I’ve been following the pda/touchscreen market for some time now as I had a Iphone 1st gen. and currently use Nokia E51.

The 5530 is very close to the device I thought Nokia would eventually release and what I was waiting to buy for “off-office” use.

I think the first mistake was mixing the design with 5800 and 5530. 5800 looks like the cheap one and 5530 has more the E-series look.

The real problem is of course the lack of 3g. I dont think (atleast in my local area, Finland) people will want to buy a “media phone” without proper internet connections. I mean, who cares about hot keys to Facebook when its slow like…

Maybe there is a E-series touch pda coming that will combine the best parts of 5530&5800. Too bad I dont see a “touchpad only” phone handy for “business use”… Also the price will be too high for leisure use… Keeping in mind the target people Nokia has.

Maybe we will see something 4Q/2009

PMPFan Says:
Feels like it’s slightly redesigned 3G-less 5800 phone. Definitely, more attractive price and look is worth it. I think Nokia should have done this even earlier – not everybody needs 3G connectivity.

MB – Sheffield Says:                                                                                                                      The phone is great! My wife loves it. I was fed up with her messaging in the bed, listening to clicking noises. With on screen keyboard she is now quiet and I can sleep. Phone is very fast compared to N95 or N82. Web browsing is smooth and quick.

ARJWright Says:
Nice enhancements in respect to the homescreen; and pretty much seems like the 5800XM without the HSDPA. Really low price too. Coolbeans.

Puddi Says:
And that phone was worth all the effort? I was expecting something much more spectacular.

Patrick Says:
Put the E72 features in the 5530 form factor, and you have a decent competitor to the iPhone 3GS or Android G1.
Once you’re in the $300+ category, you have to compete with the Blackberry Storm, iPhone 3GS and Android (T-mobile) G1 (or soon G2).
The best selling smartphones in this category have 3G data *AND* a larger screen. Too bad you have the slow data in the bigger (more attractive) form factor, and the smaller screen with the faster data (don’t you think people want a decent browsing experience with a larger screen when they pay extra for faster data???).

JH – Gosport Says:                                                                                                                        It’s my first touch screen phone and to be honest, i’m really enjoying it. The operating system for this Nokia is really simple to use and it’s also almost totally customizable. It’s the perfect size and weight, although i do recommend getting one of those silicone surrounds, just in case…The speakers are awesome and the photo/video quality are the best I’ve seen in a phone of this price. The scrolling contacts bar is particularly handy. Wi-Fi is fantastic when your neighbor naively doesn’t password protect his connection. This site provide a free 4 gig memory stick!!! Summary: Best phone I’ve ever owned and would recommend to anyone who isn’t likely to drop it.

What Do Customers Have To Say :

Chris Says:                                                                                                                                    I have this phone and must say it is almost perfect, but only almost the one thing it is lacking is a stylus, it has handwriting recognition but no stylus and so far I can’t find one which is specifically for the tocco lite and as all previous tocco’s where not to be used with a stylus there is no simple option and even once I get one it will have to dangle off the otherwise good looking phone.

Goodie Says:                                                                                                                                this phone looks great, i was hoping to buy it yesterday but wasnt 100% sure about it. i havent read any bad reviews yet. and was hoping if any one could tell me, likeLG cookie when you turn the phone to text on the full QWERTY keyboard. Does this phone do the same?

ellenii Say: Yes

Charlotte Says:
I got this phone 2 days ago. It’s a excellent touchscreen mobile and you text is easy and can be done either in portrait or turn the phone and use in landscape mode and text querty mode. It also had 12 spaces for speedialling entries that is more than normal. There is also an added bonus of GOOGLE maps which beening playing with. FAO: Chris who needs a stylus try amazon.co.uk or ebay. Still a great phone without a stylus.

sabian Says:
bought this phone with some birthday money, couple ‘a days ago im only 13 and its really easy to use good camera, sound quality and everything else is good too! was cheap as well only £98.97p

sue Says:
Love the phone got mine yesterday on vodafone, one problem do not seem to be able to switch blue tooth off has anyone else had this problem? and any ideas on how to do it please?

Rhiannon Says:
Go to the menu, applications and then bluetooth. There should be a picture of a phone with a bluetooth sign on it in a blue circle with a circle pattern behind? You simply click on the picture of the phone and should get the message ‘Bluetooth deactivated’. I hope that helps!:)

Chloe Says:
I got this phone two weeks ago – It is amazing and I love it. It looks a lot more expensive that the Cookie! It is also easy to use (apart from getting the back off). It isn’t at all necessary to have a stylus, the touchscreen is amazingly responsive to fingers, and I hardly make mistakes – it just takes a bit of practice. Camera is also good quality, even if your hand shakes. The phone is so loud I can’t hold it to my ear in calls, despite turning it down. Ringtones can also be extremly loud. Music and other stuff (including PDF book files) can be downloaded onto the phone without even installing the software. Battery life is also great – it has only needed one charge so far, and I spend hours on it (however, it took 25 hours to full charge the first time!). No real problems – would have been great to have a standard headphone jack, but these ones are fine. Would give this phone 9.9999999 out of 10. My favourite phone I have ever had!

Mobile Phones Survey

In times of recession, hang on to your mobiles!

There was a time, very long ago now, when telephones were considered luxuries. But today, the mobile phone is ubiquitous. No matter where you go, you’re followed by the ringing of the mobile phone. Perhaps you thought the global economic crisis would have put a spoke in mobile phone sales, but, and here’s the shocker, people would rather cut back on holidays than fancy mobiles!

It’s true: in a survey of 862 Britons conducted by Ofcom, 40% said they would cut down on vacations and dining out, while only 19% would compromise on their technological indulgences. This may be attributable to the fact that a mobile phone is a one-time purchase whose value spreads out tangibly over a considerable period of time, as opposed to that 2-week vacation in Greece whose only long-term value is in photographs and memories. But does this fondness for technology extend only to phones?

Apparently not. Mobile broadband service, mobile video and mobile music downloads
are also going very strong; people still need their daily dose of the idiot box and are willing to forego expensive vacations to keep themselves entertained. That Britons just can’t do without their communication technology mod-cons is what the Ofcom survey seems to indicate.

But just because the people want it doesn’t mean they’re willing to pay anything for it. What the recession means is that people are more careful about spending on mobile phones; they’re reading the fine print before they buy, and choosing the scheme that appeals to them the most. Customers, for example, to get a best mobile offer are compromising on mobile handset quality in favour of lower outgoing call charges or even taking on longer-term schemes because of the cheaper rates they entail. This just means the challenge to the phone manufacturing and mobile service providers industry is to provide the most value for money.

As is usual, the trend can never become the rule of thumb. The phenomenal success of the iPhone and the Nokia N97, both high-end, expensive electronic devices, is a direct contrast to the ideas expressed above. Contradictory aspects of the same coin, but it is food for thought. In any case, the choice is a win-win for the mobile phone industry which doesn’t seem to be going down any time soon!

And who would have thought you’d get so much out of buying a simple mobile phone? You can get a free Playstation 3 or Dell Inspiron 17 laptop, among other FREE gifts, if you simply make the right decision. From the Auto Cashback phones, phones with free insurance, Pay As U Go phones right through to the high-end handsets such as the HTC Touch HDNokia 5530 XpressMusic or Samsung Tocco Lite on the O2 600, another popular choices to buy.
